Value for Money
In terms of value for money, I would say the Xiaomi Pad 6 offers the best value. The handwriting and note-taking performance of these four tablets with their pens are probably on par, in my opinion. However, the Xiaomi Pad 6 is significantly cheaper compared to the next cheapest tablet by almost $150.
The only downside with the Xiaomi Pad 6 is that the MIUI OS does not have as many features compared to other tablets, and the OxygenOS on the OnePlus Pad also lacks features compared to the Apple and Samsung tablets.
Between the Xiaomi Pad 6 and the OnePlus Pad, I would highly recommend getting the Xiaomi Pad 6 if you have a limited budget. The main selling point of the OnePlus Pad for me, and probably the only selling point, is the aspect ratio of the display, which I prefer because I like a more squarish, less wide aspect ratio similar to the iPad’s display aspect ratio.
If we’re talking about the physical space for writing, even the smallest 11-inch tablet provides a good amount of space. With larger tablets, you may be able to open two apps side by side, so you can write and refer to another app.
The Samsung Tab S9 Plus is the same size as this 12.4-inch tablet, so you can see it’s much bigger. With a larger display, it’s more productive if you use split-screen mode, but on a smaller display, you can still use split-screen mode; the visuals will just look smaller.
I don’t really recommend the OnePlus Pad unless you want this aspect ratio because with the base model, you only get 8GB RAM and 128GB storage with no microSD card expansion. For taking notes, 128GB of storage may be enough, but if you want to install apps, games, and download stuff, you’re going to run out of storage very quickly, and it’s difficult to find a model with 256GB storage.
All the hardware for these tablets is fantastic, so you can expect very smooth performance with all of them.
Display Quality
The Xiaomi, OnePlus, and iPad tablets have LCD displays, while the Samsung Tab S9 uses an AMOLED display (the previous Tab S8 model had an LCD display). I don’t have a preference between LCD and OLED displays because a good LCD can still look good, and the LCD displays on these three tablets look very good.
The Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Samsung tablets have laminated displays. The iPad 9 and iPad 10 do not have laminated displays, so there is a gap between the glass and the LCD panel. On a small tablet, you’re not going to be affected by parallax that much, but you will be able to see a slight gap between the line and the pen tip while you’re writing.
Pen Comparisons and Performance
Xiaomi Smart Pen 2
The Xiaomi Smart Pen has a matte textured body, is comfortable to hold, and has two side buttons with shortcuts that currently work only with the default Xiaomi note-taking app at the time of this review.
This pen supports pressure, tilt, and palm rejection, and requires pairing with the tablet. The build quality is solid, the matte textured surface is nice, and it’s comfortable to hold.
The Xiaomi Smart Pen Gen 2 is sold separately for around US $50 to $60. To use it with the tablet, you need to pair it with Bluetooth first. Pairing and charging are simple and straightforward – just attach the pen magnetically to the side here, and the battery icon should appear, indicating the pen is paired with the tablet.
The plastic pen tip has slight movement, but it’s minimal, so I would consider this pen tip to be quite firm. It’s quite smooth on the glass, so this allows you to write fast, and the tapping sound is solid enough.
OnePlus Stylo
The OnePlus Stylo is sold separately for US $99. The build quality is solid, it has a nice matte textured surface, and is comfortable to hold. There is a tapping shortcut button, which only works with the default OnePlus note-taking app. The pen supports tilt, pressure sensitivity, and palm rejection. This pen is powered by a battery and requires Bluetooth pairing to work with the tablet.
For pairing and charging, you attach it to the side here, and the battery status will appear. I don’t know of any alternatives to the OnePlus Stylo for the OnePlus Pad, so if you want to write on this tablet, this pen is a must-buy.
The plastic pen tip has slight movement, but it’s minimal, so I would consider this to be a firm pen tip. The pen tip is quite smooth on the glass, which is good for writing fast, and the tapping sound is solid.
Apple Pencil
This is the Apple Pencil 2, which does not work with the iPad 9 and iPad 10. Those two tablets work with the Apple Pencil 1, which is the perfectly cylindrical Apple Pencil with a removable cap that reveals the charging port.
The Apple Pencil 1 cannot charge by attaching to the side of the tablet, so you have to charge it by connecting it to the bottom lightning charging port or connecting a cable to the tablet, which is obviously inconvenient compared to other options in this video.
The Apple Pencil 1 is perfectly cylindrical and can roll off the
